The Choices You’ll Make With Augmentation

The decision to have breast augmentation is a life changing one. Breast augmentation with Dr. Fedele is a procedure that will change you, both physically and in terms of self-image. Once you’ve made the decision to go ahead, there will be a handful of other choices you’ll need to make. They may seem overwhelming, but Dr. Fedele will walk you through each one, so that you feel confident going forward.

Implant type

Saline or silicone — both implant types have pluses and minuses. Most people feel that silicone implants have a more natural feel than saline. However, if a saline implant ruptures, your body simply absorbs the salt water. If a silicone implant ruptures, you’ll need to have any silicone that has leaked removed. That rupture point can be overstated, though, because if any type of implant ruptures, you will need to have replacement surgery to remove the ruptured implant and to replace it, if you choose to.

Implant position

You may not have known this, but you will also choose where you want your implants placed. This may seem obvious, but it’s not. Do you want the implants placed atop the breast muscle or underneath the breast muscle? Many people believe that implants placed under the muscle have a more natural look, but, as with all of these decisions, it’s all about personal preference. Also, especially with saline implants, placement atop the muscle can sometimes not leave adequate muscle coverage of the implant, creating wrinkling that can be visible on the underside of the breast.

Incision location

Basically, Dr. Fedele places your implants through three incision locations. Which you choose will affect your scarring. Implants can be placed through incisions either at the bottom of the breast, near or in the areola, or in the armpit. Obviously, incisions in the armpit don’t leave any scarring on the breasts.

Implant style

You will choose the shape, generally teardrop or round, and the size of your implants. Implants are sized based on the amount of the filling substance measured in cubic centimeters. You will also decide on the “projection” of your implants, basically this is so that your implant can match your existing breast diameter, with the higher volume equating to higher profile or projection.

This list of decisions may seem daunting, but Dr. Fedele and our entire team want the whole process to be an enjoyable one. Call us at 216-464-1616 and set up a consultation for your breast augmentation.
