Twelve Little Wounds

Skin Care Treatment Cleveland OHThe healing power of human skin is miraculous. When the skin is wounded, the body goes into full healing mode, using platelets to first clot the wound and stem any blood flow. Next, to repair the skin, the body produces new collagen and elastin. These proteins are responsible for the skin’s firmness and elasticity.

To harness this power, it’s been thought that creating a minor wound would trigger this healing power. The idea was first tried clinically in the 1950s, but there were problems with infection. Then as tattoos grew in popularity in the 1990s, attempts were made to treat scars with tattoo guns minus the ink. Following tattoo guns, skin-needling rollers came on the market.

Today, the practice has developed and is called microneedling. At Dr. Fedele’s, our Medical Esthetician Jill Rosenberg performs our microneedling procedures to improve our patients’ skin by creating hundreds of microscopic wounds.

How does microneedling do?

Our microneedling device utilizes 12 multi-speed, adjustable needles to pierce the skin layers at a 90-degree angle. These piercings cause the body to react as if it has been injured, increasing natural collagen production at the site, resulting in younger-looking skin and lessening the appearance of scars and stretch marks. This technique also allows increased absorption of topical products and their active ingredients, increasing the treatment’s effectiveness.

Because of its precision, microneedling can be used in hard-to-reach areas on the face: the lips, nose, and the areas around the eyes. The treatments are painless (a numbing cream is used before the microneedling begins) and don’t have any downtime. Plus, the punctures are so microscopic they begin healing immediately and are fully healed in hours.

Unlike laser skin treatments, microneedling can also be used on all skin tones without causing hyperpigmentation.

What happens afterward?

After your treatment, your skin will appear reddish and flushed as if sunburned. Our patients usually experience mild sensitivity to touch, a warm sensation, and skin tightness on the treated area for the first six hours. These symptoms rapidly diminish, and by 24 hours after treatment, the skin has completely healed.

Results

Patients see noticeable improvement six to eight weeks after their microneedling procedure. These results may continue to improve over time, as the body continues to produce new collagen. You’ll receive specific instructions to follow before and after the procedure to maximize your results.
