About Chin Augmentation

Chin augmentation can enhance the definition of your lower face and jawline by reshaping the chin for a more balanced facial profile based on your unique goals. While some patients notice changes in their chin over time due to aging or other factors, others are simply born with a smaller chin. Microgenia, also known as mandibular hypoplasia, is a condition that results in a weak and/or underdeveloped chin that affects the balance of your facial features. Types of Chin Augmentation

Chin Implants

Dr. Fedele can enhance your chin’s definition and shape with implants. The procedure includes a small incision, usually along the underside of the chin (submental crease). Dr. Fedele makes a pocket within the soft tissue in front of the chin bone and places the implant within. He will determine the best size and shape of the implant based on your aesthetic goals and facial proportions.

Sliding Genioplasty

During a sliding genioplasty, Dr. Fedele can reposition the chin by modifying the underlying bone structure. This approach is more comprehensive than chin implants for patients who need significant adjustments to achieve their aesthetic goals. Candidates

Suitable candidates for chin augmentation are those who would like to enhance the definition of their chin. Candidates are healthy nonsmokers–or are willing to quit smoking–who do not have a condition that would affect their ability to heal. Candidates should have realistic expectations about what they can achieve with the procedure. While there is no best age to undergo chin augmentation, candidates must have physically mature facial bones. If you have an abnormal bite (occlusion condition), we can discuss alternative treatments.

Preparation

To prepare for chin augmentation, you must stop smoking temporarily for approximately 6 weeks before and after the procedure. You must also stop drinking alcohol for approximately 24 hours before and after. Taking good care of yourself is important for optimal results. Avoiding excessive sun exposure that could damage your skin is also important for the most effective outcome. You should also stop taking medications and supplements that thin your blood before the procedure. Dr. Fedele will provide specific instructions to help you prepare during your consultation.

After Chin Augmentation

After your monitoring period, you can return home to rest. The recovery process will depend on your treatment plan. You may experience some minor, temporary swelling and/or bruising afterward. For optimal results, you must avoid strenuous activities while you heal.

We recommend taking light walks to promote healthy blood flow. Dr. Fedele will also let you know when you can return to work. You will need to follow up with the office shortly after your procedure so Dr. Fedele can monitor your healing progress.
