Having Something Done? You’re in Good Company

In a few months, the statistics for the number of cosmetic procedures performed around the world in 2015 will be released. There is little doubt the upward trend in overall cosmetic procedures will continue. In fact, in the last year with available statistics, 2014, over 20 million people “had something done.” To put that in perspective, that number is larger than the entire population of Australia.

G-day to that tummy tuck!

Couple those stats with a Time Magazine cover story in mid-summer that posited it’s more of a “when” than an “if” when it comes to Americans having some sort of aesthetic procedure performed, and the industry is on a seemingly endless upward trajectory. So, if you’re considering a procedure with Dr. Fedele you’re in good company indeed.

Just for fun, here’s a look at the ISAPS, the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, statistics from 2014. See if you can guess the answers to all of these categories before you read the numbers.

What were the top five cosmetic surgeries performed?
• Eyelid Surgery = 1,427,451
• Liposuction = 1,372,901
• Breast Augmentation = 1,348,197
• Fat Grafting = 965,727
• Rhinoplasty = 849,445

And the top five non-surgical procedures?
• Botulinum Toxin = 4,830,911
• Hyaluronic Acid = 2,690,633
• Hair Removal = 1,277,581
• Chemical Peel = 493,043
• Laser Skin Resurfacing = 480,271

Women accounted for 86.3% of the total, with more than 17 million procedures. Men had 2.5 million procedures, 12.7% of the total. The most popular for women? Breast augmentation. Men? Eyelid surgery.

Here is the breakdown by country for the year:
1. United States — 4,064,571 (20.1%)
2. Brazil — 2,058,505 (10.2%)
3. Japan — 1,260,351 (6.2%)
4. South Korea — 980,313 (4.8%)
