Ethnic Rhinoplasty
Conveniently located to serve the areas of Beachwood and Cleveland, Ohio
Rhinoplasty is one of the most common procedures in the United States (1), and it can address both cosmetic and functional concerns. While employing many of the same methods and techniques as a traditional rhinoplasty, ethnic rhinoplasty relies on a surgeon’s ability to preserve a patient’s unique facial structure as it relates to their natural and cultural aesthetic traits, rather than a one-size-fits-all Western beauty standard.
Dr. Gregory Fedele has extensive experience as a plastic surgeon and uses his talent as an artist to tailor each rhinoplasty to the unique face of the patient for natural, flattering, and personalized results. Board-certified and published across eight accredited medical journals, he has performed countless rhinoplasties for patients of all ethnicities and cultural backgrounds. If you are ready to redefine the appearance of your nose while maintaining the unique characteristics of your heritage, contact Dr. Fedele’s Cleveland, Ohio office by phone at (216) 464-1616 or fill out our online contact form, and we will be in touch!

About Ethnic Rhinoplasty
As a central feature of the face, the nose is a distinct structure. Ethnic rhinoplasty enhances a patient’s nose with special attention to inherited or cultural facial structure. (2) The best rhinoplasty will work in harmony with your natural features to refine facial balance and address any structural concerns. While each face is unique and beauty preferences expand across ages, sexes, and ethnic groups, there are common denominators that still reflect proportions, symmetry, and balance. Dr. Fedele’s personalized approach to each ethnic rhinoplasty procedure ensures results that celebrate each patient’s identity, aesthetic, and distinct profile.
Types of Ethnic Rhinoplasty
Across ethnicities, we all have opinions about our noses. Beyond appearance, the essential function they provide affects our health and quality of life. The underlying structure of the nose is mainly cartilage and bone, which hold up the skin. When those elements are not harmonious in size and shape, a nose may appear narrow, wide, flat, bulbous, or even bumpy, and we can experience chronic congestion, impaired sense of smell, or sleep disruption. Depending on your functional needs and aesthetic goals, Dr. Fedele can help you decide which type of ethnic rhinoplasty is right for you.
Augmentation Rhinoplasty
Common across all ethnicities, this procedure subtly rearranges cartilage to enhance definition, creating balance and proportion. This will create more defined or softer lines around where the nostrils meet the bridge of the nose, creating the illusion of a narrower tip. Dr. Fedele may also alter the direction of the tip of the nose to either increase or decrease its distance from the upper lip, creating the appearance of a longer or shorter nose and balancing out a more prominent bridge.
Revision Rhinoplasty
This surgical technique corrects or refines the results of a past procedure. As each procedure produces scar tissue, this type of rhinoplasty requires a focus on reversing complications from a previous procedure, as well as restoring and improving outcomes. In cases of ethnic rhinoplasty, Dr. Fedele must make these changes while accounting for a patient’s cultural identity. Dr. Fedele specializes in revision rhinoplasty and can develop the right treatment plan to address each patient’s needs and goals.
Reduction Rhinoplasty
This procedure involves reducing the physical size of the nose by removing portions of cartilage and bone from the underlying nasal structures. The goal is to refine previously protruding features to allow them to blend more seamlessly into the overall contours of the face.
Rhinoplasty Projection
In these cases, Dr. Fedele enlarges the nose by grafting cartilage from the patient’s septum and/or ribs to the underlying structure in flatter areas of the nose. This allows the nose to stick out farther from the face, giving the appearance of a more elongated, balanced midface.
Benefits
Ethnic rhinoplasty shares many of the same benefits as the traditional procedure, including restoring nasal airways, correcting asymmetry, resolving health issues, and providing aesthetic changes that increase confidence and refine facial features. Beyond those improvements, the goal of an ethnic rhinoplasty is to preserve ethnic identity while achieving facial harmony. Dr. Fedele tailors each procedure to your cultural background and personal goals while enhancing your nose’s functionality and appearance.
Candidates
Dr. Fedele tailors each ethnic rhinoplasty to the goals of each patient and the nasal nuances of their unique heritage, meaning anyone who is dissatisfied with their nose can be an eligible candidate. As with any rhinoplasty, health may affect eligibility, so prospective patients should have good general health before undergoing treatment. It is also important to have realistic expectations of what nasal surgery can and cannot achieve. Rhinoplasty is a multifaceted procedure that requires effective planning and adherence to pre- and post-operative instructions. Dr. Fedele will determine if you are a viable candidate for a rhinoplasty during your personal consultation.
Personal Consultation
Dr. Fedele will meet you for an in-depth consultation to get a better understanding of your goals. He will examine your nasal structure, discuss your goals, and explain how ethnic rhinoplasty can help you achieve the results you desire. He will learn about your medical history as well as your cultural and ethnic background, and he will suggest the surgical options that would best suit your individual facial features and preserve your unique characteristics and heritage. Dr. Fedele will show you a simulated image of your new nose through advanced digital computer imaging. With this wealth of information at his disposal, he will design the right treatment plan for you. Preparation
Dr. Fedele and our team will make sure that you are comfortable, prepared, and fully informed before your procedure. In the days leading up to your procedure, you will need to refrain from the use of alcohol, tobacco, or other forms of nicotine, and any medications or supplements that thin the blood. Additionally, Dr. Fedele asks that you arrange transportation home, obtain any necessary prescriptions, and clear your schedule to focus on resting. If your case requires any additional preparation instructions, you will receive these during your consultation.
Procedure
You will receive general anesthesia directly before the procedure to ensure you remain pain-free and asleep. Dr. Fedele can perform rhinoplasty using one of two main techniques: closed or open. With a closed rhinoplasty, Dr. Fedele keeps all incisions inside the nose. This approach is most effective for addressing breathing problems and leaves no visible scar. An open rhinoplasty entails an incision across the tissue between the nostrils, allowing him to lift the skin and underlying tissue back from the tip of the nose to expose cartilage and bone. This method provides greater access for augmentation or reduction, although it does leave a barely noticeable scar between the nostrils that will disappear over time. During your consultation, he will determine which better suits your ethnicity, nasal anatomy, and final goals.
Recovery
After surgery, Dr. Fedele will pack your nostrils with gauze and place a splint on the outside of your nose for protection and support. Most patients experience some swelling and bruising around the nose and eyes during the initial healing phase. Dr. Fedele will prescribe medication to alleviate discomfort and reduce the swelling. He will also provide detailed post-operative instructions to promote proper healing and reduce complications. You will need to elevate your head while sleeping for the first 7-10 days.
The recovery timeframe will vary from patient to patient. While you are recovering from the procedure, it is important to avoid all strenuous activities and anything that could result in trauma to your nose. You must avoid blowing your nose entirely for the first week. After this period, Dr. Fedele will remove your splint. Some swelling, however, will persist, but this is a normal part of the recovery process. Your nose will take around six months to fully heal after a rhinoplasty. Swelling may reappear during this time, particularly at night. However, when healing completes, your final results will be worth the wait.
Results
Once the swelling and bruising resolve, you will be able to see your refined, natural, and culturally consistent nose take its final shape. While each nose is unique to every patient’s facial structure, yours should reflect a harmonious balance with your heritage and surrounding features.

FAQ
How long will the ethnic rhinoplasty procedure take?
Surgery time is usually around three hours, but this may vary depending on the treatment plan and the patient’s anatomy. Some procedures can last as little as two hours.
Will insurance pay for ethnic rhinoplasty?
Typically, insurance will only cover rhinoplasty if they are medically necessary; e.g., when the surgery will restore breathing function in the nose or if injury requires reconstructive surgery. Coverage may vary, so contact your insurance provider directly to learn more.
Will the results of my ethnic rhinoplasty be permanent?
It may take your nose up to a year to fully heal, but once it does, you can expect the results to be long-lasting. Noses naturally change as we age, but often not too substantially. Barring damage incurred due to injury, the appearance of your healed nose should remain basically the same for the rest of your life.
