Should I Get Botox or Fillers?

Botox and dermal fillers are both treatments designed to reduce the appearance of facial aging, but they work in different ways.

Botox relaxes your facial muscles, softening the appearance of wrinkles, creases, and fine lines caused by dynamic facial movements. On the other hand, dermal fillers can restore lost volume and enhance the natural contours of your features. Understanding these two treatments allows you to make well-informed decisions about your self-care.

The team at Dr. Gregory Fedele’s office is dedicated to helping each patient achieve their aesthetic goals through individualized attention and tailored treatment plans. Our team has countless years of experience performing both surgical and non-surgical treatments, including face, body, and breast treatments. By combining advanced technology and trusted techniques, we can help you achieve transformative yet natural results that can enhance both your natural beauty and confidence.

About Botox

Botox (Botox®) is designed to reduce the appearance of facial aging, including fine lines, creases, and crow’s feet. This treatment is a neuromodulator, meaning it interacts with specific nerve signals. Botox specifically inhibits the release of acetylcholine, which signals the muscle movements and contractions that contribute to the development of creases or lines. (1) By preventing these contractions, this treatment not only reduces the appearance of wrinkles but also prevents new ones from forming. Neuromodulator injections are the most popular minimally invasive cosmetic procedure in the country, with over 9.88 million injections administered in 2024 alone. (2)

About Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are non-surgical treatments that can help you restore youthful volume, smooth wrinkles, and enhance your natural facial contours. They are designed to target specific areas of the face, such as the cheeks, lips, and under-eye area, giving you a refreshed and more vibrant appearance. (3) At our practice, we use Juvederm, a trusted and highly effective family of hyaluronic acid-based fillers, to provide natural-looking results tailored to your goals. Treatments are quick, minimally invasive, and can help you achieve a smoother, fuller, and more youthful look with little to no downtime.

Benefits

Botox and fillers offer a range of advantages, including:

  • Non-Surgical: Achieve noticeable results without surgery or anesthesia.
  • Rejuvenated Appearance: Smooth wrinkles, fine lines, and creases for a more youthful look.
  • Minimal Downtime: Return to your daily routine quickly.
  • Natural-Looking Results: Treatments blend seamlessly with your natural features.
  • Boosted Confidence: Many patients feel more self-assured after treatment.
  • Quick and Convenient: Procedures take less than 30 minutes.
  • Temporary but Lasting: Results last for several months before maintenance is needed.

Candidates

Anyone interested in either Botox or fillers should be in good overall health without any allergies to any ingredients or underlying medical conditions that may affect their recovery or results. “It is also important to have realistic expectations regarding the results of these treatments. Either Dr. Fedele or another specialist will determine each patient’s eligibility for both treatments during their personal consultation, recommending the most suitable option based on their goals.

Candidates for Botox

Candidates for Botox include anyone looking to address signs of aging caused by repetitive facial movements and contractions. Younger patients interested in addressing premature signs of aging as a form of ‘prejuvenation’ may also be suitable candidates. Botox is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women, as well as those with certain neuromuscular disorders.

Candidates for Dermal Fillers

Patients interested in dermal fillers typically include those interested in restoring natural-looking volume to various areas of their face, as well as filling in wrinkles, creases, and lines. Fillers are also recommended for anyone interested in augmenting the shape or fullness of their lips.

Personal Consultation

The first step to revitalizing your appearance is attending a personal consultation, where Dr. Fedele or another specialist will meet with you to understand your motivations and goals. They will ask you about your medical history, concerns, and desired appearance before evaluating the condition and quality of your skin, as well as your overall facial structure.

The details shared during your consultation will help determine your candidacy for both treatments and guide the development of your personalized treatment plan. Throughout the consultation, we will also answer any questions you may have.

To schedule this consultation and receive your tailored treatment plan, we invite you to submit our online consultation form. If you have any questions or prefer to schedule over the phone, please call our Cleveland office at (216) 464-1616.

Preparation

Regardless of whether you receive dermal fillers or Botox, you will receive a set of preparation instructions before your treatment. These will be tailored to the formula being administered and the area being treated for the best possible outcomes.

You may be asked to refrain from taking certain medications and supplements, specifically those containing blood-thinning properties. Nicotine use, alcohol consumption, and direct, excessive, or unprotected sun exposure should be avoided several days before your treatment. You may also be asked to alter your skincare routine to avoid harsh products that may affect your skin’s natural barrier. We also ask that you arrive at your appointment with clean skin that is free from any makeup or skincare products.

Procedure

When you arrive for your injections, you will be led to a private treatment room where your skin will be cleansed and sanitized. We will mark the areas on the face being targeted before administering either Botox or the filler of your choice. For Botox, these areas are the muscles responsible for the repeated contractions that lead to the development of creases or wrinkles. For dermal fillers, you may receive injections to replace lost volume, to fill in the wrinkles and fine lines, or to increase the volume of facial features. Both treatments take less than half an hour to perform, making it a quick and convenient appointment, no matter which treatment is chosen.

Recovery

You will be able to return to your normal routines immediately after your appointment, as there is no downtime associated with either dermal fillers or Botox. During this time, you may experience effects such as swelling and bruising. These effects are temporary and typically subside within the first three days to a week of treatment, but may also be managed using over-the-counter pain medications or a cold compress. You should avoid touching or putting pressure on the treated areas, as well as using moisturizers or light makeup for at least 24 hours. Physical exercise and other high-intensity activities should also be avoided for 24-48 hours.

Any additional instructions will be provided and discussed with you during your consultation.

Results

The results of both Botox and dermal fillers can be seen shortly after receiving your injections. If you receive Botox, you will experience a gradual reduction in wrinkles and lines as the targeted muscles begin to relax. You will experience a more youthful-looking appearance as your visual signs of aging are reduced, as well as smoother skin overall. The results of Botox are designed to last for several months, with most patients experiencing effects for three to five months before receiving maintenance injections.

If you receive dermal fillers, you will be able to experience immediate improvements in your appearance after the appointment. You will be able to enjoy a more defined and contoured facial sculpt, as well as a plumper, more voluminous appearance. The results of dermal fillers can vary depending on what formula is used, what areas are treated, and your body’s natural metabolism.

FAQ

What is the difference between Botox and dermal fillers?

Botox is designed to relax the facial muscles responsible for repeated muscle contractions that lead to the development of facial wrinkles and creases. Dermal fillers are designed to restore volume and fill in creases and wrinkles.

What concerns do both injectable treatments address best?

Botox is ideal for treating the appearance of forehead lines, crow’s feet, and frown lines, while dermal fillers are ideal for concerns such as sunken cheeks, thin lips, nasolabial folds, or under-eye hollowness.

Can my injectable treatment be reversed?

The effects of Botox cannot be reversed once administered, but our dermal fillers may be dissolved using an enzyme called hyaluronidase. If you wish to remove your fillers, we ask that you schedule a personal consultation.

When will I see the results of my injectable treatment?

The full results of Botox can typically be seen after two weeks, while dermal fillers provide immediate enhancements.

Can I combine either Botox or dermal fillers with another cosmetic treatment or procedure?

Yes, both Botox and fillers may be combined with other treatments, or with each other, for more cohesive and comprehensive results. We recommend scheduling a personal consultation to learn more about combining your treatment.
